Abstract

The contemporary economic landscape is increasingly defined by the vitality of entrepreneurial activities, which are geographically bounded within distinct entrepreneurial ecosystems. While significant academic attention has been directed toward premier global startup hubs, second tier cities remain underrepresented in the literature despite their growing contribution to national economic resilience. This study investigates the predictive relationship between entrepreneurial ecosystem density and startup survival rates specifically within second tier urban environments. Utilizing a comprehensive comparative case methodology, the research evaluates diverse regional ecosystems to identify how variations in resource agglomeration, human capital concentration, and institutional support mechanisms influence the longevity of newly established ventures. By synthesizing qualitative case narratives with quantitative density indicators, the analysis reveals that high ecosystem density operates as a critical buffer against the inherent liabilities of newness and smallness. The findings suggest that second tier cities characterized by tightly interconnected support networks, accessible localized funding, and robust knowledge spillovers experience significantly higher startup survival rates. This paper provides actionable insights for regional policymakers and economic development practitioners, emphasizing the necessity of cultivating dense, localized entrepreneurial infrastructures rather than merely attempting to replicate the scale of primary global hubs.
